Valor Vacations®

Valor Vacations®, one of the programs offered by Restoration Ranch Colorado, was started in 2021 by Kathryn Severns Avery.  Her husband, Christopher, was killed in 2020 by three robbery suspects fleeing from Lakewood (Colorado) Police. Knowing she would be unable to use her vacation rental while pursuing justice for her husband, she offered time at the property to the Lakewood PD.

Because of the ongoing judicial proceedings, the Lakewood PD decided to pass the offer on to West Metro Fire.  A West Metro firefighter family spent a week at her home. The program has expanded and now vacation rental owners across the country make a tax-deductible, in-kind donation of a stay at their property to Valor Vacations®. There is no cost to Valor Vacations® award recipients for use of the vacation home although a security deposit is required.

How It Works

To participate, each stakeholder group/agency (dispatch, fire/EMS, law enforcement, emergency department personnel, and members of the judiciary) must create a nominating committee of two or more members. This may include, but is not limited to, peer support team members and chaplains. Nomination criteria include compassionate circumstances, family of a first responder killed in the line of duty, burnout, involvement in a critical incident, and meritorious service.

At the end of each quarter, the stakeholder group’s nominating committee forwards nominees to the Valor Vacations® Selection Committee for consideration. Vacation awards are made the next quarter by an impartial selection committee who review nominations. Special consideration is given to nominees who have experienced on-the-job trauma and the families of fallen first responders.

In 2023, Valor Vacations® proposes to award a minimum of 18 vacations. Waivers/NDAs for both recipients and vacation donors are required.
